Course Information

Located at 5595 E. Moreland, in Phoenix Arizona, Papago Golf Course was designed by noted architect William Bell (also designed both Torrey Pines courses) with assistance from legendary Arizona professional Johnny Bulla.  Bulla was known to play both left and right handed and established the course record of 61.  Opened in 1963 by the City of Phoenix the course hosted the US Amateur Public Links Championship in the 1971 and continues to be a common site for Monday qualifying for the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

PGA Professionals Billy Mayfair and Jim Carter and LPGA pros Heather and Missy Farr grew up playing Papago and learning the game from Arch Watkins, the long-time Head Profressional at Papago.  Another PGA Champions Tour winner, R.W. Eaks was a staff member at Papago under Head Professional Joe Huber in the 1970's.

In early 2007,  the City of Phoenix, in response to a request for proposals, awarded the Arizona Golf Foundation with support of the Arizona Golf Association a contract to renovate the golf course and clubhouse.  Their plans included some design changes on the course and demolishment of the existing clubhouse with the intentions to replace it.

The golf course reopened in December of 2007 with Al Murdoch as Director of Golf.  The Ladies PGA Tour played their Phoenix event there in April 2008.  The course was hard and fast.

A couple of years later the Foundation defaulted on its loans and the City of Phoenix regained management of the facilities without a new clubhouse.  Mark Woodward was selected to manage the facilities until the City could develope the requirements for another long-term management arrangement.  Woodward did an excellent job of maintaining the course and rebuilding the number of rounds on the course.  The City entered into an agreement with OB Sports to provide course maintenance for all of the city courses including Papago.  The City retained their golf staff to manage the other city courses and Woodward was retained by OB Sports to continue the management of all facilities at Papago.

Eventually the City entered into an agreement with Arizona State University to move its golf program from the Karsten ASU Course on the ASU campus to Papago Golf Course.  That agreement will eventually provide a new clubhouse.  Daryl Crawford is managing the golf operations and OB Sports manages the course maintenance.
